Have you got a licensed frog or reptile that you can no longer care for and would like to find a new home for it? SOFAR have permission from NPWS to collect these frogs and reptiles and adopt them out to a licensed frog or reptile SOFAR member. For more details call 0418 666 073 or 0416 421 455.
SOFAR are not licensed or approved to rescue reptiles from your yard or property, however SOFAR can assist you with contacting a person who is licensed to catch and release these reptiles. SOFAR recommends you to contact a qualified and licensed person as lots of people will offer to do it, however in most cases they are not licensed through NPWS nor do they have their own Public Liability Insurance. Please note due to SOFAR being a non profit group with limited resources and funds we are only able to collect frogs and reptiles in our local and surrounding areas, these being Newcastle and Hunter Region areas in New South Wales (NSW). If you are not in these areas we may be able to give you contact details of local groups like ours or contact your local National Parks and Wildlife services or equivalent in your state or territory.

FROG RESCUE
|
 |
Helping displaced and injured frogs and reptiles.
For many years frogs have been accidentally displaced from the rural and interstate areas in the transporting of fruit and vegetable boxes, cut flower trade and by bulk plant wholesalers. These little guys may be sick or diseased, their prospects for survival are poor. Furthermore they pose a possible disease threat to local species if released.
In November 1999 SOFAR sort to address this problem by creating a Frog Rescue Service in Newcastle and the Hunter Region. This service was modeled on a similar service which was created by a Sydney group called The Frog And Tadpole Study Group of NSW Inc. (FATS), in October 1998.
Where possible a frog rescuer visits markets and businesses leaving plastic containers, so staff can house the frog when found and pick up any new arrivals. From there they go into a quarantine program for a period of at least 8 weeks. Strict records must be kept such as where frogs were collected from, date collected and survival rate. Then the happy healthy frogs will be ready for adoption and a new home. Those potential frog owners must have a frog keeper's licence, which can be obtained from the National Parks and Wildlife Service NSW, and be a member of SOFAR.
Cane Toads in NSW
SOFAR have received many calls over the years with reports of residents finding Cane toads and what they thought were cane toads. Some however were not Cane toads and in fact turned out to be native frogs, with exception to the calls we received from residents in Carrington, Macquarie Hills and Cardiff where they were indeed cane toads which were collected by SOFAR Frog and Rescue Coordinator.
If you find what you think is a cane toad or any other frog not from the Hunter please give SOFAR a call on 0418 666 073 or 0416 421 455.
