All species of Turtles are protected, in some states you'll need a licence to keep one. Check with your local National Parks and Wildlife Association. For your convenience SOFAR have a link to the National Parks and Wildlife Service in the Licensing section.
Turtles need access to water and land at all times, whether in an indoor or outdoor environment. Turtle's need exposure to sunlight 2-3 times a week. This will keep its shell hard – essential for good turtle health.
Keeping turtles in a tanks:
Its important to clean the tank and change the water at least once a week. Make sure your tank has:
 A temperature control – if the waters too cold, turtles can't digest their food properly
 A good filter
 Some pebbles or a piece of driftwood to let your turtle dry off
 UV lights (at least 10 cm away from the water)
 Vegetation, if you're keeping short-necked turtles
Keeping turtles in a pond:
It's best to let your adult turtle live outside if you can. Make sure you have:
 A fence around the pond
 Access to good sunlight and shade
 Vegetation
Food:
Turtles are mostly carnivores, so they'll eat: blood worms, mosquito larvae, fish and red meat.
