General characteristics: A very agile lizard.
Has the ability to swim when needed.
Will fight to defend its territory.
The throat pouch is inflated to increase its apparent size, particularly during fights over territory.
They live in harem-like groups with the male controlling ten or more females. They are dark brown to yellowish-brown or pale grey. On the inside of the mouth it is bright yellow. The belly is creamish with greyish circles. Juveniles have more pronounced patterning. They are most active during the day. They mate in spring and lay up to 3 clutches of 6-35 soft-shelled eggs (about 23 mm long) from September to December. Hatchlings are about 8 cm long and emerge 9-12 weeks later.
Diet: Mainly insects, also frogs, small reptiles, mammals, vegetation, fruit, vegetables.
Habitat: They are semi-arboreal and are usually found around fallen timber and tree stumps.
Status: Secure.
