The Girl Guides features in this photo are (left to right) Marie Knowles, Denise Major, Susan Grey and Margaret Baker. This photo was taken at Askam Band Hall, and dates from c. 1970.

The guides are receiving their Queen's Guide Award until the 1980s this was the highest award a guide (10-15 years of age) could achieve. In 2004, when this picture was first posted, guides worked towards the Baden Powell Challenge Award; the Queen's Guide Award was by that time reserved for Rangers/Young Leaders (16-25 years of age). The uniform they are wearing was introduced in 1968; the cross-over tie was replaced by a neckerchief in the 1980s.

Information on the guides' names was supplied by Karen Hanks. Historical information on the awards and uniforms was supplied by Susan Benson, archivist for the Barrow branch of the Cumbria Records Office and member of Girlguiding South Cumbria. Thank you to both of you.
