Pte John Brocklebank, one of the many Askam and Ireleth soldiers killed during the Great War. This photo is from the Barrow Guardian of Saturday 10 June 1916; the papers of the period are littered with such death notices. The report reads:

"Last week we briefly mentioned that Mr. and Mrs. E. Brocklebank, Vulcan Hotel, Askam, had received official notification that their son Pte John Brocklebank, was killed in action June 15th last year. Pte. Brocklebank was a popular young soldier, and was well known in Dalton and Askam. He served his apprenticeship with the late Isaac Burrow, joiner, etc., Dalton."
