The Hunter Renal Resource Centre was established by the Hunter Renal Resource Committee in 1986. The role of the centre is to provide people with kidney disease and their families/partners/carers with information and educational material to assist them in coping with the effects of renal disease on their lifestyle.
What is the Hunter Renal Resource Committee?
The Hunter Renal Resource Committee is a sub-committee of the Nephrology Unit Management Committee. This sub committee was established to meet the educational needs of renal patients, renal staff and members of the public. The Committee is responsible for the management of the Renal Resource Centre.

What does the centre provide?
Lending Library
The centre has a lending library of resources including books, pamphlets and audio-visual materials that are available to patients, staff and members of the public. A catalogue of available resources is available from the Renal Resource Co-ordinator or by telephoning (02) 49439635.
The centre organises regular patient education seminars on topics of interest. Past seminars have included information on dialysis treatment options, transplantation, diet, exercise, leisure, sexuality and other areas of interest identified by patients.
While many resources exist for people with kidney disease there are still many gaps in the educational materials available. The centre is committed to developing resources to meet the needs of the local community.
Meeting Rooms
The centre has a well furnished and equipped meeting room available for use by local community groups for a nominal fee.
The Renal Resource Committee has taken an active role in both health promotion and illness prevention. Each year in conjunction with the Australian Kidney Foundation's Kidney Week the Committee has undertaken a major health promotional campaign encouraging early screening for detection of kidney disease.
Research
The centre is committed to assisting in the ongoing needs of patients with kidney disease its treatment and prevention.
The committee works alongside the local community organisation - The Hunter and Northern Kidney Association (HANKA). This association is dedicated to improving the lifestyle of people with Kidney Disease. In addition to promoting a program of self help and education, the Association provides financial assistance to the Nephrology Unit to assist in extending and improving facilities for kidney patients.

The Renal Resource Centre is located at the Wansey Dialysis Centre in Charlestown, Lake Macquarie, near Newcastle.
The Wansey Centre provides limited care, home training and high dependency community dialysis to people with special needs.
The Resource Centre is open from 9.00am - 5.00pm, Mon to Frid (except Wed - closed).
During these hours you are welcome to drop in for a browse or to watch a video. (If you are unable to attend during these hours other arrangements can be made). However, if you have specific information needs it is best to first phone the Co-ordinator to discuss your requirements.
