History ~ Newcastle Cycleways Movement was formed in 1977 as a community based group to work with State and Local Government bodies to improve bicycle facilities in the Greater Newcastle Area. Its aims are to promote the safe responsible use of bicycles for transport, leisure and fitness. Its first major success was the implementation of the Newcastle Area Bike Plan which has guided the construction of the first-class cycleways from the centre of Newcastle westward to Wallsend, recent links to the University, sections of a North-South route and scores of other improvements and spot treatments in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Council areas. The Bike Plan also trialled Education and Enforcement programs for the State. It was also involved in conjunction with the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle City Councils and a group of consultants to revise the 1981 bike plan. NCM holds regular monthly meetings and weekend rides to which all are invited. New members are made welcome. Future Projects NCM is now looking further afield at major projects including the Wallsend to Glendale cycleway link, a cycleway linking Sandgate with Maitland, a link from Waratah to the University, and to the south, there is a real possibility of securing the disused Adamstown to Belmont rail corridor as a cycleway. This exciting project along the abandoned Adamstown-Belmont railway is considered to the highest priority for cycling in our region as it would provide a safe, almost level route of some 15 km, linking the populous suburbs of Eastern Lake Macquarie to the cycleways of Newcastle. As well as widespread community support, we have support from Newcastle and Lake Macquarie City Councils, local State and Federal politicians, local progress associations, a number of schools and their P & C Associations. We sincerely hope that funding can be found and approval given for this project to proceed in the near future.
