Capercaillie is one of the newest and smallest working wineries in Australia's oldest wine growing region, owned and run by Alasdair Sutherland, a proud Scot and his Australian wife Trish.
Capercaillie is the culmination of Alasdair and Trish's combined 40 year history in the wine & hospitality industries. Alasdair started his winemaking career at Arrowfield in the Upper Hunter Valley in 1975 before moving to Saxonvale winery at Broke. Within 2 years he was promoted to Senior Winemaker and made his mark in the local industry with the many award-winning wines he produced. Trish trained in Hotel Management and ran her own catering business. In 1989 they moved north to Yamba to open their own restaurant.
They never lost touch with the wine industry and returned to the Hunter Valley 4 years later to search for what became the Capercaillie Wine Company.

History
Inspired by the rare and majestic black woodlands grouse of his native Scottish Highlands, the Capercaillie Wine Company was established in 1995 when Alasdair & Trish purchased the 25 year old Dawson Estate vineyard in Lovedale. No time was wasted with the construction of the new winery which was operational for the 1996 vintage.
