The Queensland State League was introduced by the QRL in 1981, and first played in 1982. It was and is competed for by the Brisbane clubs and sides representing the Queensland country areas.
Initially it was a knockout competition, with the first round played at the start of the season and subsequent rounds in May. Latter the number of early rounds increased to about six.
In 1991 and 1992 a new format was tried, with the Brisbane clubs combining as two teams, the Brisbane Metros and Brisbane Capitols. It was dumped in 1993 in favour of the old system.
The competition changed dramatically in 1996, expanding into a full year round robin competition and effectively replacing the Brisbane competition, which has since become a minor one.

The Foley Shield is a competition for teams from North Queensland. It was named for Arch Foley, an official who worked hard to promote football in the area.
The number of teams playing appears to be shrinking. In 1982 eight teams competed: Herbert River, Mt Isa, Cairns, Innisfail, Townsville, Burdekin, Mackay and Whitsunday. In 1991 six teams compete: Herbert River, Mt Isa, Cairns, Innisfail-Eacham, Townsville and Mackay. In 1995 four teams competed: Cairns, Mackay, Mt Isa and Townsville.
The competition was discontinued in 1996 to make way for the expanded State League.

"Leagues around the QRL Wide Bay Division have been involved in Intercity Competitions since 1915. The Birch Cup was the first trophy played for and the current Trophy is the 47th Battalion Memorial Trohpy.
"The 47th Battalion Memorial Trophy was donated in 1971 by Bundaberg's Peter Marcelles who emigrated from Greece and served in the Battalion which the Trophy was named after in World War II. It was his tribute to the memory of fallen comrades during the battles in World War II."
