Koolang Astronomical Observatory
The mind... is a fire to be lit!

Welcome to Koolang Observatory's web site. Koolang Observatory is a privately operated, public access, astronomical observatory and space science display centre. We operate most days and nights a week throughout the year.

Koolang was designed and built with two purposes in mind - to make science, especially astronomy, more accessible to the general public; and to be a resource for those involved in teaching astronomy to children of all ages - K to 12. Our on-site lessons for school children are curriculum based.

About this page

The image at the top of this page is of the first operational use of the Manned Manoeuvring Unit piloted by NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless in February 1984. It, and other space flight images have been included on this site to flag the fact that we cover both astronomy and space flight.

The second image is of the peculiar galaxy NGC 5128, known to radio astronomers as Centaurus A. As the name implies, it is in the constellation of Centaurus and, even at a distance of about 14,000,000 light years, is visible with 7 X 50 binoculars under the dark sky available at Koolang Observatory. It is the furthest object we show visitors to Koolang.

Posters of these images, and many others which appear on this site can be purchased by the public. See our links page for wholesale and other retail sources.
