Herbert George Eldridge was born at Peasmarsh, Sussex, England the son of Young Richard Eldridge, a clocksmith and silversmith, and Sara Ann. He married Sarah Frances Eldridge at Hollington, England in 1889. She was the daughter of James Eldridge and Sarah Galane Dunk. It is thought that Herbert and Sarah were related but the connection is not known.
On the 1891 English census the couple were living at 12 Oak Hill Beckley and Herbert was a gardener. On the 1901 census they were living in the Hollington area with their children Edward, Frederick and Charles and Herbert was a labourer on the railway.
Herbert emigrated to Australia on the Moravian that arrived in VIC in Dec 1909 and his wife Sarah and children Edward, Frederick, Charles, Alice, Albert and Stephen followed on the Rangatira that arrived in VIC in Jan 1911.
Herbert died aged 45 at the Corowa Public Hospital in NSW on 27 Nov 1914 and was buried at Carlyle Cemetery, VIC. His death certificate shows his children as Edward Charles 23, Frederick William 20, Alice Maud 13, Albert Ernest 11, Stephen George 10 living; 2 males 3 females deceased. Sarah died at Rutherglen on 29 Jan 1935. Her death certificate shows her children as George dead, Edward Charles 43, Frederick William 38, Charles James dead, Edith dead, Alice Maud 33, Albert Ernest 31 and Stephen George 30.
