Project aim
To
establish a demonstration worm farm and
composting facility at the council's
Recycling Education Centre for tours by the
public and schools.
Project methodology
- The site for the demonstration worm
farm was chosen because of its proximity
to council's Recycling Education Centre.
The site also includes the waste
transfer station and materials recovery
recycling facility.
- An undercover area with a concrete
floor was constructed to house compost
bins and worm farms at various stages of
development.
- A commercial worm farm was also
installed so that it could be shown to
larger groups.
- A small garden was incorporated into
the facility so that practical
demonstrations could be given on the use
of worm castings and the liquid excess
from the farm.
Project outcomes
- Council has been able to construct a
covered area to set up working worm
farms and composting facilities.
- This education facility has become
part of council's overall Waste
Minimisation Education Program with
visits to the facility by school chilren
and the public incorporated into
council's waste minimisation and
recycling tour.
- A display has been incorporated into
the Earthworks Practical Day.
- The facility demonstrates practical
ways to set up and maintain worm farming
and composting in the home.
- Substantial reductions of waste to
landfill can be achieved over the whole
of the council area by encouraging
individual households to reduce their
own kitchen and garden waste.
Key factors contributing to project
success
Council's active promotion of worm
farming and composting to its residents
contributed to the success of the project.
Information material developed
Information on the facility has been
included in council's Waste Management and
Recycling Program.
