A competition organised by Super League as a rival for the
State of Origin series. It consisted of a three way playoff
between teams representng New South Wales, Queensland, and
New Zealand, with a final between the two best performing teams.
After New South Wales won the opener, the order of
the second and third matches were reversed.
Some controversy arose after the third match. New Zealand only
needed to win the game to displace Queensland in the final, which
was scheduled to be played at ANZ Stadium. This would have been
a marketing disaster for Super League, faced with the prospect of
moving the final away from their biggest market or of presenting a
game to Brisbane sans Queensland. After some discussion they had
announced prior to the match that the final would be held in
Brisbane no matter what. In the final seconds of the game
New Zealand winger Sean Hoppe had a try disallowed when the
linesman called him offside, even though he was clearly onside.
If converted the try would have given New Zealand the win.
Many New Zealanders were not happy.
The final took 104 minutes to decide. At full time the match
was locked at 22-all. The teams then changed ends and played an
extra 10 minutes each way, during which no points were scored.
So they did it again, but this time under sudden death rules,
and New South Wales finally kicked a field goal. Perhaps a draw
would have been a fairer result.
SL New South Wales 38 beat SL Queensland 10
on Friday 11th April at Sydney Football Stadium.
SL Queensland 26 beat New Zealand 12
on Friday 9th May at Ericsson Stadium.
SL New South Wales 20 beat New Zealand 15
on Wednesday 14th May at Bruce Stadium.
Final:
SL New South Wales 23 beat SL Queensland 22
on Monday 19th May at ANZ Stadium.
