The various Queensland competitions appear to be in a state
of flux at the moment. I'm not sure whether this is a normal
thing, or is typical. In fact, I have very little data about
Queensland, and what I do have is sketchy at best.
Numbers in brackets after a town name indicate the population
of that town, thus giving an idea of how strong the competition
is relative to other competitions. Plus signs "+" indicate
minor premierships. History is given where known, usually no
further back than the start of the 1994 competition.
A rugby league competition has been run in Brisbane since 1909, but
it included teams from other parts of the state.
In the early 1920s, Brisbane officials started moves to form an
autonomous competition, and the Brisbane Premiership kicked off in
1922, with six clubs competing: Carltons, Coorparoo, Fortitude Valley,
Past (Christian) Brothers, University, and Western Suburbs.
Past Grammars joined the competition in 1923,
and the Wynnum Rugby Union club swapped codes in 1931.
Brisbane switched to a district competition in 1933. Carlton became
Southern Suburbs, Coorparoo and Wynnum amalgamated to become Eastern
Suburbs, and Grammars became Northern Suburbs.
University reverted to rugby union in 1934. Wynnum-Manly joined in
1951. South Coast joined in 1952 but dropped out again in 1955.
Redcliffe joined in 1960, Ipswich in 1986, and Logan City in 1988.
In 1988, Wynnum-Manly and Fortitude Valley tried merging,
but despite winning the premiership they split up again at the
end of the year.
In 1988 the Brisbane Broncos joined the Sydney competition,
fielding their third grade side in the Brisbane competition.
In 1995 the South Queensland Crushers followed suit.
[During the 40s, 50s, and 60s, the Brisbane Courier Mail
seems to have regarded the result of the B.R.L. grand final as
important--certainly far too important to publish!--Jim]>
