Newcastle

[1962] [1964]

The season was rain affected, causing the finals series to be pushed back three weeks. On one occasion the series was delayed because Newcastle Council groundsmen decided on the Wednesday that the grounds would be unfit, though by Saturday they were fine. In order to get things finished the NRL played the two semifinals on the same weekend, on the Saturday and Sunday. Newcastle Council did not normally allow organisations to charge admission to its grounds on Sundays, so this took a special motion by Council.

In the first grade competition at the end of round 17, South Newcastle were leading the competition on 24 points with two games to play and Central Newcastle were second on 23 points with three games to play. In that round Maitland played Central Newcastle and beat them, and South Newcastle paid the Maitland players a bonus of five pounds each (the prizemoney for winning the competition was 75 pounds). The Board felt that South Newcastle should be punished for bringing the game into disrepute--their action had breeched one of the Board's rules--but nothing was done. South Newcastle went on to win the competition for the first time in seventeen years.

Trouble arose between the NRL and the CCRL ( q.v.).

Central Coast

Trouble arose between the CCRL and the Newcastle Rugby League. The Central Coast played its games on Sundays, and had a gentlemen's agreement with Lakes United (their parent club) that players from their competition would not be called on to play for that club on Sundays. However, Lakes United were having a bad year and didn't take much notice. This and the continuing opposition from Lakes United and the NRL to their gaining group status led the CCRL to consider withdrawing from the CRL. Things were patched over.
