City Cup

The organisation of the cup was a little odd. It was based on the final rankings of the clubs in the 1959 premiership, with rank determining when and who the clubs played. In particular, it overlapped the premiership final series, so that clubs dropping out of the series would then play in the cup. Because of the odd format, North Sydney had to win six games in a row to win the cup. They won five, and then were beaten by St George in their only match against them.

Newcastle

[1958] [1960]

On the 27th April the Stockton RL club joined the Newcastle Rugby Union competition. They felt they had not been given a fair deal by the NRL, who were "only interested in their top three grades of competition." Stockton was a club inside the Northern Suburbs district who had only ever played in lower grade competitions, and had not played at all in 1958 when the competition they were to play in had been cancelled when it only attracted 3 teams. In their first year in top grade rugby union they finished on 13 points, just outside the playoffs.

There was some comment during the year about entering a team to represent the Central Coast area, which fell within the district run by Lakes United. Toronto entered the competition in 1960.

The game between South Newcastle and Maitland on 4th July at Maitland Sports Ground was televised Iive on NBN. It was the first direct televising of a rugby league game in New South Wales.

Mal Woolston donated a trophy to be presented to the club champions. Lakes United were the inaugural winners with 404 points.
