State Championship

Competing teams: (16) the eight Sydney teams, six Newcastle teams, plus teams representing Groups 7 and 10.

Some controversy arose when three matches were postponed due to rain--only the second time such a thing had ever happened. They were rescheduled for the following week, one being played on Sunday in Newcastle, and the other two on Monday in Sydney. This of course heavily favoured the Sydney teams, who did not have to travel to Newcastle after working all day. The Newcastle Rugby League objected, and threatened to withdraw the three teams involved, but backed down when threatened with disqualification, and because the players would have lost their bonuses. The two Newcastle teams playing in Sydney lost. The Sydney Rugby league had issued tickets to the postponed games rather than give refunds--rescheduling the matches on the Monday night saved them from the loss of revenue they would have faced if forced to allow the tickets to be used at premiership games. In recompense the NSWRL sent a team to play the Newcastle representative team.

Newcastle

[1944] [1946]

The NRL became concerned with the lack of grounds: Newcastle Council gave the rights to use them to other sports, and the rugby union people weren't very cooperative. League was the only sport making a profit for the council.

The State Cup caused a bit of a kerfuffle. Two second round matches played in Sydney were washed out and had to be replayed. The NRL felt that one of them should be replayed in Newcastle, but the NSWRL would have lost money. The NSWRL instead sent a representative team to Newcastle, who beat them.

At the end of the year a movement started to form a new District Club in Lack Macquarie. Lakes United eventually entered the competition in 1947. The Eastern Suburbs club felt they should be considered for readmission before a new club; it was decided that there was no longer room for both Eastern Suburbs and Northern Suburbs.
