Souths changed from stripes to green with a red V. Canterbury changed to maroon and blue for two seasons. Balmain changed to plain yellow. Wests changed to all black.

1942 was a war affected year. The number of players dwindled, and clubs had trouble fielding teams and had to forfeit matches. The Maitland United club were unable to field a team. The Eastern Suburbs club withdrew from the competition after round 13. The 6 remaining Eastern Suburbs first grade players were allowed to play where they chose.
During the year a call was made to either change the boundaries or return to club based football, as otherwise Northern Suburbs would cease to exist, and Central Newcastle soon afterwards. A boundaries committee was formed.
A number of matches were organised between the Newcastle team and teams from the army. The proceeds were turned over to charity. The results of these games were:
Army 13 beat Newcastle 11
on Monday 15th June at Newcastle Sports Ground.
Army Seconds 28 drew with Newcastle Seconds 28
on Monday 15th June at Newcastle Sports Ground.
Newcastle Seconds 16 beat Combined Military 11

Army 25 beat Newcastle 23
on Saturday 1st August at Newcastle Sports Ground.
Newcastle Seconds 9 beat Army Seconds 4
on Monday 1st August at Newcastle Sports Ground.
(The above two games were in aid of the Russian Appeal.)
At the end of the year it was decided to reduce the number of teams in the competition from 10 to 8 to bring the competition into line with Sydney and facilitate the State Cup. Eastern Suburbs were dropped, and Maitland United merged with Morpeth-East Maitland to from Maitland District.
