Newcastle 1918 - 1920

Due to division of 1918 two separate competitions were run in Newcastle in 1919.

The NSWRFL (Northern Branch) ran a four grade competition for 11 clubs: East Newcastle (district), Carrington and Stockton (East juniors), Northern Suburbs and South Newcastle (both breakaways), Broadmeadow, Mayfield and Waratah (juniors clubs), and Cessnock, Kurri Kurri and Weston (Hunter District clubs). West Wallsend also joined, but switched sides before the first game. Cessnock joined mid-season, and the Kurri first grade side was formed after the season had started. The Northern Branch pushed the line that players from the rival association would never play representative football, and 1919 saw a plethora of representative football come Newcastle's way. However, they still had trouble getting enough players, and often the senior teams found themselves filled with lower grade players.

The NDRLF Association ran a three grade competition for 7 clubs: Central Newcastle, Northern Suburbs, South Newcastle, and Western Suburbs (district), New Lambton (West juniors), Boolaroo and West Wallsend (junior clubs). Central Newcastle entered a first grade team, but were forced to withdraw before the competition started. At the end of the season the Association also ran a knockout competition, and Kurri Kurri swapped sides to play in it. The Association competition drew the better newspaper coverage and crowd support.

One of the main problems both sides faced was the lack of enclosed grounds. The lease on the League Ground had expired and the fence had been torn down, and the Sports Ground was unavailable. So at most games clubs had to rely on passing the hat, which rarely raised much.

Hunter District 1915 - 1920

The Hunter District competition reformed after going into recess for the duration of the war. At first it was decided not to run a senior competition as there were not enough quality players, but after a couple of weeks one was started. It was decided to allow the Coalfields teams to go their own way, and most of them ended up playing in the Newcastle competition. An influenza epidemic hit Maitland and the Coalfields during the year, disrupting the competition badly.
