Newcastle 1917 - 1919

Again only three three grades were played. Only three teams entered the first grade competition, and it was abandoned after five weeks when it became clear there weren't enough quality players.

It came to the attention of the NSWRL that Dan Davies, who had been disqualified for life in Sydney, had played a match for Western Suburbs. As a result of this, and because of the failure of the NSWRL (Northern Branch) to provide medals for the first grade premiers in 1916, most of the Northern Branch officials were disqualified for a year. This didn't go down too well with the Novocastrians, who immediately set up their own rugby league competition, the Northern District Rugby Football Association. The NSWRL branded it an unauthorised body, and warned that anyone involved with it faced being banned for life.

The lower grade competitions petered out as the clubs sided with one group or the other.
