Balmain completed a hat trick of premierships, and in doing so won the H.D. McIntosh Shield outright.
In round 8, Glebe defeated Annandale 31-5. In doing so they used a player--Dan "Laddo" Davies--who was living at Annandale, and therefore should have been playing on the other side. Davies was disqualified for life, and Glebe had two points deducted. Glebe protested by fielding a second grade team for their round 13 clash against Balmain, and had their entire first grade team suspended, some players remaining so until the following year.
The incident had greater repercussions. Davies had been signed from Newcastle Western Suburbs, and after his suspension returned there. Being short of players due to the war, the club tried repeatedly to have his suspension lifted, and eventually fielded him in a match anyway. The NSWRL disqualified almost all the Newcastle competition officials for a year, and a breakaway competition formed which lasted until 1919.

The war continued to cause problems. Only three grades were played.
Wests and Central were unable to field first grade teams so Kurri Kurri were invited to enter a team. East Newcastle withdrew at the end of June after a series of forfeits. Northern Suburbs, who were leading the competition, withdrew from all grades in mid July. (Why?) This left only two teams, so it was decided to play a best of three series for the premiership. The first game was played, but a major strike that affected all public transport made it impossible to bring the two teams together, and the competition was abandoned two months later in October.
