During 1914 and 1915 delegates of the NSWRL met with representatives of the Australian Football Council in Melbourne with a view to unifying the codes and establishing a national game. Nothing came of the negotiations, mainly because the Victorians did not want to give up high marking and offside play.

Rugby union suspended its (Sydney) competition because of the war. Already on its last legs as far as spectators were concerned, it never recovered the ground it lost because of this move. Although things may now be changing...

Sydney 1914 - 1916

Balmain won the first of its five premierships in six years. It went through the season unbeaten, and became the first club to win premierships in all three grades.

Hunter District 1914 - 1919

The HDRL committee decided to suspend the competition for the duration of hostilities (WW1). Only one off games were played. Many clubs played in the Newcastle lower grades over the next few years.
