The English league imposed a ban on the importation of colonial players, which lasted until 1923, and was then extended a further two years at the request of the NSWRL. This was because of the continued recuitment during tours of Kangaroos by English clubs.

Hunter District 1912 - 1914

Three round robins followed by a final were played in each grade save D grade, in which one round robin was played followed by a top eight final series.

A Grade Premiership

The season ended in some controversy. The final game was played between Cessnock and Kurri Kurri. Cessnock had already secured first place on the ladder, but Kurri Kurri had to win, or else play off with Maitland United for a place in the final. Cessnock tried to throw the game, but the referee caught on, and after repeated warnings abandoned the game. The HDRL decided to abandon the whole first grade competition. Kurri Kurri and Cessnock appealed the decision, the appeal was passed on to the NSWRL, and on their recommendation Cessnock was disqualified, leaving Maitland United and Kurri Kurri to contest the final.
