1911 saw the introduction of the right of challenge,
whereby the minor premiers had the right to challenge
the winners of the final in a grand final match if they
themselves did not win it. This right lasted until the
introduction of compulsory grand finals in 1954.
The first rugby league match was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground,
when the pro-union SCG Trust weakened its stance to allow a match between
New South Wales and New Zealand to take place. It was the beginning of an
association that lasted until the opening of the Sydney Football
Stadium in 1987.
The NSWRL aquired a lease on the Sydney Sports Ground (which stood
on the site of what is now the Sydney Football Stadium).
The Marrickville club applied to field a first grade team in 1912,
but was rejected.
