Newcastle competitions
Location: Newcastle and the lower Hunter Valley, including Cessnock, Maitland and Nelson Bay.
History: A Newcastle team played in the first two Sydney premierships, in 1908 and 1909. In 1910 they withdrew to form their own competition. The original four teams were Central Newcastle, Northern Suburbs, South Newcastle and Western Suburbs, and they were joined from 1912 by Eastern Suburbs.
Problems arose during the war years due to a lack of players. The Hunter District competition shut up shop for the duration of the war and many of their clubs played in Newcastle competitions, Kurri Kurri playing first grade in 1918 and 1919. A transportation strike led to the abandonment of the 1917 competition. A division between the local administration and Sydney lead to the 1918 competition also being abandoned, and a split competition in 1919. The division was healed in early 1920.
In 1926 the NSWRL gave control of the Hunter District to Newcastle, effectively merging the two competitions. Two teams, Kurri Kurri and a combined Hunter District, played in the President's Cup of that year, and in 1927 Kurri Kurri, Maitland United, and Morpeth-East Maitland joined the competition. Waratah-Mayfield were promoted from the second grade, and in 1930 Cessnock joined to round it out to 10 teams.
During World War II teams again had difficulties rounding up players. Maitland United were unable to field a team in 1942, and Eastern Suburbs were forced to drop out during that year. At the end of 1942 the NRL rationalised the competition to eight teams in order to conform with Sydney so as to make the running of the State Cup easier. Eastern Suburbs were dropped, and Maitland United and Morpeth-East Maitland merged to form the new Maitland District team. The State Cup folded after 1945 due to lack of interest from Sydney teams.) In 1945 there were moves to add a new team based in Lake Macquarie, and in 1947 Lakes United joined the fold, winning the competition in their first year. Eastern Suburbs applied to rejoin the competition in 1945 but were rejected.
Toronto were promoted to first grade in 1960, and in 1962 they changed their name to Macquarie United. In 1968 Central Newcastle changed theirs to Central Charlestown, and in 1983 Northern Suburbs changed theirs to North Newcastle.
From the late 1970s onward a number of attempts were made to persuade Newcastle to again join the Sydney competition, and in 1988 the Newcastle Knights did so. This had an impact on the local competition. In 1989 Macquarie United amalgamated with Toronto Workers Club, becoming Toronto Workers, and North Newcastle amalgamated with the second division side Nelson Bay, becoming North Nelson Bay.

Hunter District
The Hunter District Rugby League was formed in 1911 to control rugby league in Maitland and the Coalfields (Kurri Kurri and Cessnock). The competition was never a very steady one, and the roster of clubs changed frequently. During the First World War the competition shut up shop and a number of the clubs fielded teams in Newcastle competitions. In 1926 the CRL handed control of the Hunter District to Newcastle, and clubs fielded teams in the President's Cup competition of that year and thence in the Newcastle competition. The Hunter District board kept control of the junior competitions, which continue today under the aegis of the Maitland club (cf. Maitland and Coalfields Second Division).

Lower Hunter Second Division
In 1959 the Kurri Kurri club had difficulty raising a third grade team, and the secretary proposed to the NRL that the third grade be done away with in favour of a second division. The idea was not at first well received; it was felt that there was not enough experience available to make it work, and that if it flopped it would put paid to the idea for the forseeable future; and also that it weaken the Maitland junior competition, from whence a number of the clubs were expected to come. However, the idea gained ground, and the competition was duely established in 1960 (although the third grade was not done away with).
The competition struck immediate trouble from a predictable source. The new competition was club based, and the clubs could thus draw players from wherever they wished. However, players in the Maitland district needed to be registered by Maitland to play in the new competition, and registrations were not forthcoming. There was talk of a merger with the Maitland Juniors, but the new competition would have none of it. Eventually the NRL had to override the Maitland club and register players directly, which left Maitland officials less than happy.
The A Grade competition has run since 1960, with a concurrent reserve grade since 1967. Some clubs fielded teams in both grades, others in only one of the two. In 1982 this was reorganised into two separate competitions, the Jim Euston Cup and the Keith Manning Cup. Several clubs field sides in both cups, with the Keith Manning Cup regarded as the lesser of the two.
The B grade competition has run since 1960, although there was a 2 year break in 1964 and 1965. In 1976 it was reorganised into two separate groups, the John Dunn Cup and the Kel Worth Cup. In 1995 these were combined into the Murray Cruicks Cup, which in 1996 split back into two cups, the other being the Art Wright Cup.
