About the Area
An excellent example of the early coal mining can be seen in a well presented automatic exhibit at the Cessnock Rugby League Supporters Club. A short drive out of Cessnock will have you in the wine growing region, famous for its red wines. Select from over 130 vineyards, cellar door and wine tasting venues. Hunter Valley is renown for its vineyards but the region holds many hidden secrets from a bygone era.
The region was founded on the back of the coal mines and supported the growth of the states economy for many decades. The mines can be seen throughout the district and when overlooking the Newcastle coastline, a flotilla of ships can be seen awaiting the precious cargo which remains one of Australia's biggest exports.
